Boston South End Brownstone Gut Renovation
A modern revitalization of a South End brownstone.
Boston’s South End is has been one of the city’s most sought-after neighborhoods of last one or two decades. The neighborhood is lined with classic brownstones: brick buildings that Boston is noted for in both the South End and Back Bay, which can date back to the 19th century. While many of these buildings, and the units within them, are still in great condition – constantly being updated over the years – they often have more traditional stylings. This is why we were delighted when we were approached by Melinda Sarkis of Coldwell Banker NE and the Sarkis|Troyer Team to help bring our touch of modern European style to a classic condo in a prime location in the South End.
The goal from the beginning was for modern style from the moment you step foot into the home. Upon entering you’re greeted with a modern staircase that seemingly floats off of the wall. The cantilevered stairs from Alfa Scale, with glass handrail opposite the wall, provide a minimalist feel and an added openness to an area of the home that could otherwise feel constrained.
The open floor plan from kitchen to living room seating area continues that airy openness that we find in modern, open-concept homes. In addition, the choice of top of the line appliances, such as a Gaggenau oven and induction cooktop and the Thermador hood bring the kitchen well into the 21st century. The gray shaker style lower cabinets add an updated version of a transitional New England style, while modern white upper cabinets with motorized opening and closing mechanisms, as well as the fully paneled refrigerator, provide the touch of modern European cabinetry.
Additionally, modern bathrooms – including a luxurious master bath with a dual sink master vanity, shower, and modern tub – and wardrobes and closets from Pianca help round out the modern European design choices for the home.
The final piece to the home is the custom outdoor kitchen in the patio area. The custom cabinetry with glass fronts finished in a crisp, clean looking white finish surrounded by a custom granite countertop is topped with a top of the line 30 inch Wolf outdoor grill.
